Ukraine Wants to Import LNG from Mozambique

During a phone call with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, Zelenskiy noted that, before the war, Ukraine met nearly all of its gas needs through domestic production, but Russian attacks caused the country to lose about half of its output.
According to a Reuters report, during the talks, Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that Kyiv could offer support to Mozambique in the fight against Islamic insurgency and in improving security.
“Ukraine is interested in additional energy supplies. Mozambique is interested in Ukraine’s experience and technologies to strengthen its internal security and protect its population from terrorism,” said Zelensky, without providing details on the volumes of gas that could be involved in a potential agreement.
During the same session, the leaders advocated for dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law as fundamental pillars for the peaceful resolution of conflicts around the world, expressing concern about the challenges to global peace and security as well as their impact on the economies of developing countries.
Mozambique has three approved development projects for the exploitation of natural gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin, ranked among the largest in the world, all located off the coast of Cabo Delgado Province.
A study by the consulting firm Deloitte indicates that Mozambique’s vast natural gas reserves could generate up to $100 billion in revenue by 2040, making the country one of the world’s ten largest producers and accounting for 20% of Africa’s LNG production.
Ukraine has not imported Russian gas since 2015. Official data from the European Statistical Office for the energy sector showed last week that the country has begun storing gas in its underground facilities in preparation for the upcoming heating season.
