World LNG Report Places Mozambique Among the Key Countries in the Next Wave of Global Supply
The global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market has entered a new phase of expansion, marked by record trade levels, rising investment in new production facilities and the growing importance of the fuel to energy security. Against this backdrop, Mozambique is emerging as one of the countries with the greatest potential to take part in the next wave of global supply.
The World LNG Report 2026, published on Tuesday, 7 July, by the International Gas Union (IGU), assigns Mozambique a project portfolio with a combined capacity of close to 45 million tonnes per annum, the largest among African countries.
This potential is concentrated in the Rovuma Basin and is mainly linked to the Mozambique LNG project in Area 1, as well as Coral South, Coral North and Rovuma LNG in Area 4, alongside possible future expansions through new floating or onshore facilities.
Mozambique’s position is becoming increasingly relevant in a market where LNG is no longer merely an additional source of energy, but a strategic asset for security of supply, the reorganisation of trade routes and the reduction of dependence on individual suppliers.
For the country, however, the central issue is no longer simply the size of its existing gas reserves. The challenge lies in transforming the Rovuma Basin’s resources into regular production, sustainable public revenues, employment, national skills and opportunities for Mozambican companies.
