Tourism Recovering After Pandemic but “Mozambique Must Strengthen Image as an Attractive Destination

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edelvina Materula said Thursday, October 13 in Maputo during the opening of an FIKANI – International Tourism Exhibit that “tourism grew grew 59.7% during the first three months of 2022,” meaning that the sector is experiencing a rapid recovery after difficult times caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

“At a national level, the reference indicators for tourism indicate that in the period from January to March, tourism recorded growth of 59.7 percent,” said Materula, explaining that “national tourism is being boosted by Government initiatives, such as the diplomatic actions adopted by the country abroad, focusing on the countries that are our main partners and neighbours, the new air routes that allow tourists to arrive in other parts of the country, and also thanks to tourism promotion platforms in SADC zones.

Materula also noted that Mozambique is a member of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organisation, where he hoped to use this position to publicise the country’s potential, noting that “Mozambique should strengthen its image as an attractive tourist destination.

As for the current investment situation in the sector, the Minister considers that “we have registered in a period of nine months 2022, the entry of projects that include those of central approval, such as tourism facilities, establishments, travel agencies and tour operators.”

According to the World Tourism Organisation, in 2019 tourism had a global growth force generating 1.7 million dollars, constituting about 4% of global GDP and about 30% of service transactions.
