“Results of Natural Gas Exploration in Búzi Block Will Be Known in Two Years”
The results of the natural gas research in the Búzi block, in the centre of the country, will be known within two years, said the president of the National Petroleum Institute, Nazário Bangalane, quoted by the press this Monday, 15 August.
The drilling, led by the company Buzi Hydrocarbons, began in 2019, but was interrupted in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic.
“After the company Buzi Hydrocarbons successfully completed the drilling of two exploration boreholes and culminating in the discovery of natural gas in the Upper Grudja and Lower Grudja formations, it has entered into appraisal work that may require the acquisition of additional 2D/3D seismic data and the opening of other boreholes for further evaluation,” explained Nazario Bangalane, quoted by Notícias.
The opening of each of the research holes was valued at 13.2 million euros, according to data from INP advanced in 2020.
Indonesian company Buzi Hydrocarbons holds 75 percent of the rights to the Búzi block and the Mozambican government 25 percent, via the National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH).
The intention to invest in gas exploration in Búzi, whose records of possible occurrence date back to 1962, was announced in 2015 and at the time the plan was to drill about 15 225 feet deep in the BD1 and BD2 wells, both within the Búzi gas field.
The Indonesian company announced the start of drilling in 2019, at which time the only commercial natural gas exploration in the vicinity of that point was being done by South African group Sasol.
