HCB Reaffirms Plan to Increase Energy Production Capacity to 4,000 MW by 2034
For the first time in 50 years, HCB has been implementing a series of equipment upgrades since 2022, some of which were already obsolete, aiming to modernize energy production and improve efficiency.
Without disclosing investment costs, HCB CEO José Munice assured that “by the end of the 10-year Capex Vital program, a capital investment initiative for expanding and modernizing energy production infrastructure, the company will be able to double electricity production capacity from the current 2,075 MW to 4,000 MW.”
Each year during Capex Vital, one generator will be offline for maintenance and modernization. To offset this temporary reduction, a photovoltaic plant with higher capacity than the current one will be installed in Changara district, Tete province, ensuring stable energy supply.
Since the project began in 2022, major interventions have already taken place at the Songo substation, including transformer rehabilitation. Procedures are currently underway to modernize the converter station, essential for increasing electricity production. The HCB rehabilitation and modernization project is expected to create over 300 new jobs throughout its implementation, contributing to the economic and social development of surrounding communities.
José Munice emphasized that Capex Vital will allow HCB not only to double production capacity but also to modernize aging infrastructure and improve energy efficiency, meeting the country’s growing demand.
The initiative represents a historic milestone for HCB, providing sustainable energy solutions and ensuring that Mozambique will have greater electricity production capacity over the next decade, strengthening national energy security.
