Graphite output doubles full-year forecast in Q1 2026

Mozambique’s graphite production surged in the first three months of 2026 to 28,018 tonnes, double the amount initially forecast for the entire year.

“Production levels were influenced by the operational consistency of the largest producer of this mineral and the entry into the market of a new company in Niassa, which contributed to an achievement of 189% of the planned target,” reads a government document on mining production results for the first quarter.

This performance contrasts with the government’s forecast for this year, which stood at 14,814 tonnes of graphite, a downward revision from previous estimates for 2025 performance, which had initially pointed to 13,468 tonnes, at a time when the country was still affected by post-election unrest.

However, Mozambique closed 2025 with actual graphite production of 67,078 tonnes, although no production was recorded in the first quarter due to the closure of the main facility in Balama, Cabo Delgado — which supplies the North American electric vehicle battery market — following protests that erupted after the October 2024 general elections and lasted for more than five months.

In 2022, graphite production in Mozambique reached a record 165,900 tonnes, but fell to 97,300 tonnes the following year and declined by 64% in 2024 to 34,900 tonnes due to the suspension of operations by producing companies.

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo said on 30 January that the new graphite processing plant — inaugurated by him that day in Niassa province — represents an opportunity for Mozambique to consolidate its position in the global market as a supplier of processed minerals, where there is strong demand for “high-purity graphite”, breaking with the “historic model of simply exporting raw materials”.
