ENH and Buzi Hydrocarbonet Negotiate Gas Exploration Expansion
Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH, EP) and Buzi Hydrocarbonet are discussing the expansion of natural gas exploration activities in the Búzi block, located in Sofala province.
The negotiations, which involve the possibility of new exploration and production blocks, follow a meeting between ENH and representatives of the Indonesian petrochemical company, which is responsible for 75 per cent of the Participatory Interest in the block, while ENH holds the remaining 25 per cent, according to the newspaper Noticias.
Rudêncio Morais, ENH’s research and production manager, revealed that during the talks, Buzi Hydrocarbonet expressed interest in participating in other research and production blocks, either in partnership with ENH or in projects in the development and/or production phase.
The expansion aims to increase knowledge of Mozambique’s natural resources, reinforcing the participation of national staff in exploration and production initiatives.
The director emphasised that the expansion process is still at an early stage of discussion and that the technical and financial aspects need to be matured. ‘We have a list of blocks that, at the appropriate time and depending on the conditions presented by Buzi Hydrocarbonet, could be evaluated for possible partnerships with ENH,’ he said, referring to the company’s information collection that allows it to analyse the potential of the blocks already available for direct negotiation with the regulator.
One of the advantages of negotiations with Buzi Hydrocarbonet, according to the director, ‘is the flexibility offered to ENH in terms of financing.’ The current partnership model means that ENH does not need to mobilise funds during the development phase of the projects, but can only repay the investments at the start of commercial production. This model, Morais emphasised, makes the project more financially accessible and beneficial for the state.
Buzi Hydrocarbonet currently operates the Búzi block, where natural gas production is expected to begin in 2026. If the expansion negotiations are successful, Mozambique could see a significant increase in its hydrocarbon production capacities, consolidating its position as an important regional player in the energy sector.
The statement also highlights the importance of attracting new international partnerships, with the aim of boosting the country’s hydrocarbon sector and ensuring that the projects contribute to Mozambique’s economic and social development.
The president of the Indonesian company Buzi Hydrocarbonet, Iman Soerjasantosa, revealed in August that the company has plans to invest approximately 7.5 billion meticals (120 million dollars) in Mozambican.
The sum will go towards building a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production platform, reinforcing the company’s commitment to contributing to the development of the country’s energy sector and expanding its operations in natural gas exploration.
