EDF Power Solutions Invests in Hydroelectric and Solar Projects in Mozambique

According to Tristan de Drouas, Vice President of EDF Power Solutions for Southern Africa, the company plans to implement a series of multi-technology projects covering wind, solar, hybrid, hydroelectric power, and energy storage systems. These investments are part of a plan to add approximately 500 MW of new capacity each year across countries in the region, including Mozambique.
The Nachtigal hydroelectric project, recently inaugurated in March 2025 in Cameroon, with a capacity of 420 MW, serves as a model for similar initiatives that EDF Power Solutions intends to develop in Mozambique, Malawi, and Madagascar. These hydroelectric plants aim to significantly contribute to the stability and sustainability of local power supply.
In addition to the hydro segment, EDF is also developing solar and battery energy storage projects in various locations across the region, in an effort to diversify and strengthen Southern Africa’s renewable energy network.
The company, which has had an established presence in South Africa since 2009, is seeing growing demand from private clients in the region, partly driven by the Envusa Energy joint venture with Anglo American, which aims to reach 5 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
EDF Power Solutions has not yet disclosed how much it plans to invest in Mozambique. The renewable energy projects are part of a broader plan to support Africa’s energy transition, with a focus on clean sources and more resilient power grids.
