Shell, Brazil Oil Sector See Mozambique as Emerging Energy Power

The assessments were made following separate meetings between Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and representatives of the Brazilian Petroleum Institute (IBP) and Shell Brasil, one of Brazil's leading oil and gas producers, on the sidelines of the Fórum Petróleo e Gás 2026, held on Sunday (20) in Rio de Janeiro, according to a report by Lusa.

Shell Brasil president João Rosa said Mozambique is well placed to build an energy industry of international scale.

"Mozambique is very well positioned to develop its energy industry and to be, obviously, one of the world's largest hydrocarbon producers," Rosa said.

He added that Mozambique "has everything it takes to become a major energy power", highlighting the country's gas reserves, the presence of world-scale projects, and its connections to international markets.

During the meeting with the Mozambican delegation, Shell discussed cooperation opportunities, technical skills development, the sharing of international experience, and potential investments in the energy sector.

"We spoke about the new law, about conditions that have been updated, and we will look at this very carefully and with great attention in order to identify opportunities that are beneficial to all," Rosa said.

Nelson Filho, president of the Rio Fórum Petróleo e Gás, argued that Brazil's accumulated experience in oil, gas, and renewable energy exploration could help accelerate the development of Mozambique's energy sector.

"We see a unique opportunity for the two countries to work together and develop together," Filho said, also highlighting the potential of Mozambique's gas reserves in the current context of energy market transformation.

Filho said gas will continue to play a relevant role in the energy transition, noting that "Mozambique holds one of the largest gas reserves in the world".

He added that Mozambique's geographical position further reinforces the country's potential to secure a prominent place in international energy markets.
