Mozambique Receives European Union Funds for Energy Transition

"The choices Africa makes today are shaping the future of the entire world; the transition to clean energy on the continent will create jobs, stability, growth, and the achievement of our global climate goals,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen when announcing the funding from Team Europe, as cited by Notícias ao Minuto.

Mozambique is the only Portuguese-speaking African country included and will receive €13 million to “support the transition to low-emission energy and encourage private sector participation.”

According to Brussels, Africa’s renewable energy potential “is enormous, but nearly 600 million people still live without access to electricity,” meaning “the way this transition to clean energy unfolds will play an important role in shaping future development, regional stability, and progress on climate change.”

The EU’s support for Africa’s energy transition “is not only a moral and development imperative, it is also a strategic choice that strengthens supply chains, creates up to 38 million green jobs by 2030, and makes energy systems more resilient,” the document states.

Côte d’Ivoire will receive the largest share of the funding, nearly €360 million, for a high-voltage transmission line to boost regional energy distribution, while €59.1 million will go to Cameroon to electrify 687 communities, home to more than 2.5 million people. Among other allocations for technical and feasibility studies, the Republic of Congo will receive €3.5 million, Lesotho €25.9 million, Ghana €2 million, and Madagascar €33.2 million, along with an additional €45.5 million for Somalia to expand access to affordable renewable energy, promote circular economy practices, and develop climate-resilient agri-food systems.

This initiative will be carried forward to the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, taking place November 22–23, where world leaders and investors will meet to strengthen partnerships and secure the financing needed to drive Africa’s renewable future.
