Mozambique Chosen for New Raxio Data Centre in $290M Project

Raxio Group, a data centre company backed by Meridiam Infrastructure Partners SAS and US private equity firm Roha Group, recently announced the opening of its first data centre in Mozambique. This inauguration is part of an ambitious 18.4 billion metical (290 million dollars) investment project in Africa.

According to the international portal Data Center Knowledge, the CEO of Raxio Group, Robert Mullins, also revealed that the company plans to develop 10 data centre facilities across the African continent over the next few years. ‘Our business plan includes a portfolio of 10 data centres, and the financing package we have now, with debt and equity, covers that,’ he said in an interview. ‘This year, we are opening five new facilities in different African markets.’

‘The growing need for connectivity, artificial intelligence capacity and data storage in Africa has attracted significant investment from tech giants such as Microsoft and Huawei. Mozambique, with a young and tech-savvy population, represents a promising market for these investments, especially with the increased use of smartphones for services such as banking and entertainment,’ reads the news item.

The CEO of Raxio Group pointed out that Raxio has already secured more than 7.6 billion meticals (120 million dollars) in equity from its shareholders and a debt package of 6.9 billion meticals (110 million dollars) from France’s Proparco and the UK-backed Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund. In addition, the company is in negotiations with third parties to obtain at least another 3.8 billion meticals (60 million dollars) to complement its debt facilities as it moves forward with the construction of the data centres.

‘The expansion into Mozambique is part of a wider effort by Raxio to cover under-served African markets, with a special focus on countries with large populations and following the submarine cable route to coastal markets, including Angola, Ivory Coast and Tanzania. With this new facility in Mozambique, Raxio now operates in seven African markets, with a total expansion capacity of 33 megawatts in these countries,’ describes the source.

‘Our aim is to build facilities that meet local needs, but that can also host companies like Microsoft, AWS, Google or Meta in any country,’ said Robert Mullins.
