Expansion of Maputo Port Container and Coal Terminals to Be Completed in 2027

“We expect to complete the expansion of the container terminal in the first quarter of 2027, and the expansion of the coal terminal also in the first quarter of 2027,” said Osório Lucas, Chief Executive Officer of the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), the private company responsible for managing the port.
The official was speaking on the sidelines of the 9th Biennial Conference of the Porto de Maputo, held in the country’s capital, where he explained that the general cargo terminal has already been expanded.
He further noted that construction of 400 metres of quay between quays 2 and 4 is expected to begin by the end of this year.
According to Osório Lucas, these interventions are part of a four-year project valued at approximately 500 million US dollars, aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the Porto de Maputo, considered the largest port infrastructure in Mozambique.
“Our expectation is that 2028 will be a year of achievements, given the investments we are currently making,” said the Chief Executive Officer, highlighting the growth phase in which the Porto de Maputo is currently positioned.
