Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant Seeks Partnership to Reactivate ‘Central Norte’ Power Station Project

Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), Mozambique’s main energy producer, is looking for a partnership to reactivate the ‘Central Norte’ project (a new power station that will be located on the left bank of the dam) designed to diversify and expand the energy business, the newspaper Noticias reported on Tuesday 22 October.

According to the newspaper, the resumption of the project means a projection of growth, and a process is already underway to hire a consultant to support the implementation of the initiative, recalling that previous studies have demonstrated the existence of high-level characteristics for the North Power Station.

‘We plan for this infrastructure to have up to three production groups of 415 Megawatts (MW) each, the same number of water intakes, two restitution channels and bottom discharges capable of discharging at least 2,200 cubic metres per second,’ he stressed.

The entity reiterated that HCB ‘s diversification and expansion projects are part of the government’s strategy to position the country as the centre of clean, reliable and low-cost energy production in the southern African region

‘We have been carrying out strategic reflections with a view to reactivating the project and increasing the installed capacity from the current 2075 MW to around 4000 MW (including 400 MW of photovoltaic energy) by 2032, transforming Mozambique into a regional energy hub,’ he added.

Located in the province of Tete, with headquarters in the town of Songo, HCB is a public limited company incorporated under Mozambican law and with majority public capital, which operates the project under concession, with the aim of producing, transporting and marketing electricity efficiently and sustainably, maximising benefits for shareholders and generating wealth for the country.
