CONFERÊNCIA INTERNACIONAL 50 ANOS DA HCB

Parabéns to Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa and 'joyeux anniversaire' from all of us at Camara de Comercio e Industria França-Moçambique CCIFM!

Yesterday, the CCIFM was honored to take part in the 50th anniversary celebration of Mozambique’s flagship energy provider, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB). Representing the Chamber were Laurence Vabret Yeung, Vice President of the Board of Directors, and Crystelle Coury, Director General.

The ceremony, inaugurated by His Excellency President Daniel Chapo, brought together government officials, national and international stakeholders, private sector partners, and industry leaders to commemorate this milestone.

HCB stands as Mozambique’s primary electricity producer, accounting for 78.7% of the country’s power generation. Established during the Portuguese colonial era, the company’s dam was constructed between 1969 and 1974 in the narrow gorge of the Zambezi River. Today, the Cahora Bassa reservoir is the fourth largest in Africa.

Chairman Tomas Matola tribute to HCB’s five decades of excellence, resilience, and strategic importance—not only for Mozambique, but for the broader Southern African region. “HCB has played a vital role in financing the state through tax contributions and concession fees, underscoring its value beyond energy, as a key contributor to the national budget,” he said.

Looking ahead, HCB’s 2025–2034 strategic plan aims to boost its installed capacity from 2,075 MW to 4,000 MW. This ambitious growth will be achieved through infrastructure rehabilitation and investments in new energy sources, including 400 MW of solar power, as well as wind and gas-fired projects.
