Mozambique and Malawi sign MoU on construction of rail line

The governments of Malawi and Mozambique on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction, starting next year, of a railway line between the two countries, Radio Mozambique reports.

The project, estimated at approximately US$26 million, covers the construction of a 44-kilometre line from Mutarara, in Mozambique’s Tete province, to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.

Speaking at a press conference in Beira, Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Janfar Abdulai, said that the line could generate more than 80 million tons of cargo per year.

Malawi’s Minister of Transport and Public Works, Sidik Mia, said the line would open a new page in the economic recovery of his country.

Malawi currently imports more than 48 million tons of diverse cargo a year via Beira and Nacala ports in Sofala and Nampula provinces, respectively.
